Privacy Policy

Compassion Atlas ("we," "us," "our") operates compassionatlas.com (the "Site"). This page explains what information we collect, how it's used, and the choices you have. We built this Site to be genuinely simple: there are no user accounts, no logins, and no personal profiles.

Information we collect

Search activity

When you search a location, your query is sent to Google's Places API to fetch nearby restaurants and lodging. We do not create an account or persistent profile tied to your searches. Your last search is temporarily kept in your browser's session storage so it's still there if you navigate to Favorites and come back — this is stored on your device only and clears when you close the tab.

Favorites

Restaurants and stays you save to Favorites are stored in your browser's local storage, on your device. We do not receive or store this list on our servers.

Place suggestions and issue reports

If you use the "Suggest a place" or "Report an issue" forms, the information you type in (place name, location, notes, or reason for a report) is sent to our database (hosted by Supabase) so we can review it. Please don't include personal information you don't want us to have in these free-text fields.

Location (if you use "Near me")

If you tap "Near me," your browser asks permission to share your device's GPS location. This is used only to run that one search and is not stored by us. You can decline this permission and search by typing a location instead.

Analytics and cookies

We use analytics tools to understand how the Site is used in aggregate — page views, general visitor counts, and which searches are common. These tools may use cookies or similar technologies:

• Google Analytics — collects anonymized usage statistics. You can learn more or opt out via Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
• Vercel Analytics — a privacy-focused analytics tool that does not use cookies and does not track individuals across sites.

Advertising

We may display ads on the Site, including through Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites. You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or generally at aboutads.info/choices.

Third-party services

The Site relies on the following third parties to function:

• Google Maps / Places API — provides restaurant, hotel, and map data. Subject to Google's own Privacy Policy.
• Supabase — securely stores place suggestions and issue reports you submit.
• Vercel — hosts the Site and processes requests to make it work.
• Anthropic (Claude) — occasionally used behind the scenes to help identify restaurant details from public review text; no personal data is sent to this service.

Data retention

Suggestions and reports are kept so we can review and act on them. Search history and favorites live only in your browser and are never transmitted to or stored on our servers.

Children's privacy

The Site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
